Boucleme Travel Set

Bouclème was the very first haircare brand we decided to bring to Ayla. We chose it because curly hair is gorgeous, and it’s especially challenging to care for — so we decided curlies should be the first in line to get products that pass our “non-toxic but really works” test. It’s the best line of curl care products we’ve ever seen, and it’s one of the most exciting new hair care brands out there, period.

We were also captivated with the story its founder, Michele Scott-Lynch, shared during our first phone call: Having grown up battling her curls, one of the saddest things Michele heard as a mom was her curly-haired daughter’s lament that she hated her own curls. So she created Bouclème.

That’s love. And that love really comes through in these unbelievably great products. Read on to learn more about Bouclème from Michele.

Ayla: Aside from the story you shared with us about your daughter, what prompted you to create these products?

MICHELE: I’m a big fan of all things natural. A healthy diet, exercise and natural beauty products are key elements of my life. After researching the ingredients of curly hair care ranges, I found that the majority of products available were sulfate and silicone based – two ingredients that perpetuate the problem of dry, frizzy curls. One strips the hair of all protective oils; the other, a non-water soluble film former, gives the illusion of smooth and sleek hair but prevents much-needed moisture from entering the hair shaft. The only thing that can remove silicone is sulfates, so it becomes a vicious cycle of curls being dried out by sulfates and requiring more silicone to fix it.

The search for natural and effective alternatives for curls wasn’t easy, and after experimenting with flax seed gels and conditioning treatments, I decided to create my own natural range that I could use on myself and on my daughters’ hair. I had never worked in the beauty industry before, so it was a big leap of faith. Previously, I worked in marketing for a record company and then went on to train as a homeopath – which was when my quest for a holistic lifestyle really took off.

Ayla: What do you think makes Bouclème unique?

MICHELE: The Bouclème range is handcrafted in small batches in the UK using natural botanicals. Our range uses coconut and argan oils that can penetrate deep into the hair shaft, delivering moisture where it’s needed most. Rich in antioxidants and omegas 3, 6 and 9, they strengthen and protect the hair from the inside out. Add to this the humectant properties of Aloe Vera leaf extract and the conditioning properties of Linseed, and together they hydrate, soften, and smooth the hair cuticle, enhancing curl formation and definition.

Our products are fragranced using natural essential oils of mandarin, bergamot, spearmint, magnolia leaf and magnolia flower, which leave hair feeling fresh and fragrant.

As a plus, we’ve recently partnered with Trees For The Future — so for every bottle or travel kit you buy, we’ll plant a tree.

Ayla: That's a great bonus! And are these products appropriate for all types of curly hair?

MICHELE: Our initial range of three products is designed to help as many curl types as possible. However, every head of curls is unique, and what works for one may not work for another — so we’re looking to extend and diversify the range to cover everything from fine, loose waves to thick, tight curls. For example, fine hair types may find the Curl Cleanser rich, so in October 2015 we’re bringing out a low-lather hydrating hair cleanser specifically for that hair type or for those who like to do a deeper monthly cleanse.
