We’re big believers in the link between great skin and a healthy lifestyle: as important as it is to use the best products on your skin, that’s not all there is to it (as you might have noticed if you’ve ever woken up and looked in the mirror after a night of too much stress, too little sleep, and too many glasses of Shiraz).
To get three simple steps we all can take to support naturally healthy skin from the inside out, we went to top facialist Julia March.
Ayla: What three steps should we all take in our everyday lives to keep our skin naturally healthy?
I talk about this a lot with my clients. Here are the three things I think have been most helpful to everyone:
1. Drink enough water.
If you drink alcohol, coffee, black tea, and other dehydrating beverages, water will help keep everything in balance. If you have a cup of coffee - organic is best - try to drink 2 glasses of water with lemon to balance it (lemon will balance the acid in coffee).
2. Manage stress with Omega-3s and deep breaths.
When we have a lot of adrenaline, it increases inflammation in our bodies, and that will inflame our skin as well - I can’t count how many times I hear “I’ve been under so much stress at work, and now I have these breakouts!” Omega-3s in fish and flaxseed oils will help keep inflammation under control. And when we’re under stress, we also start taking shorter and shorter breaths, which doesn’t bring enough oxygen into our cells. You don’t have to set aside a lot of time for this; for example, anytime you’re at a red light, just take a few deep breaths as a reminder.
3. Keep your digestive system healthy with probiotics and hot water with lemon.
When your digestive system isn’t working properly, it can show up in your skin as dryness, itchiness, sensitivity, or acne. To keep your digestive system healthy, take probiotics every morning. They contain good bacteria that will help improve immune function and nutrient absorption.
A healthy liver is essential for good digestion. A cup of warm or hot water with lemon is a great way to start your morning: the water temperature won’t shock the intestines, and the lemon will help cleanse your liver. Other beverages that help keep your liver healthy are dandelion tea and Pau D’Arco tea. Dandelion greens are great to eat, too!
