Doctor-developed, surfer-approved performance sunblock
During days when we’ve spent hours in and out of the water at the beach, with thoughts of sun-induced DNA damage dancing menacingly in our heads (yes, we’re weird that way), we’ve thought, “This everyday sunscreen is nice and all, but what do surfers use? Because whatever they use on the water has got to be serious. We want that, whatever it is.”
Luckily, we learned about this gem of a sunscreen from the Outer Banks of North Carolina thanks to a tip from a vacationer, who saw surfers slathering on this particular sunscreen with gusto. BANXBlock was developed by Dr. Jeff Pokorny, a local plastic surgeon who’d been searching for a mineral sunscreen for his patients that would also help prevent scarring. When he couldn’t find one good enough to recommend, he made this one; after his patients started telling everyone within earshot about this amazing sunscreen, his wife, Anne, packaged it up and started selling it to local surf shops. Thank goodness for Jeff and Anne’s resourcefulness, because if you love your fun in the sun, this is the stuff.
BANXBlock — this Fragrance Free formula in particular — has developed a major following far outside the Outer Banks with professional surfers, paddle boarders, water polo players (it’s the official sunscreen of USA Water Polo), and lifeguards (it’s the official sunscreen of the LA County Lifeguards). Oh, and marathoners and triathletes love it, too. They all appreciate three very simple things:
1. It’s non-toxic and mineral based: no nasty chemicals that could harm you or the coral reefs
2. It provides water-resistant protection with zinc, titanium dioxide, and a host of antioxidants and anti-inflammatories that have the side benefit of helping with scar healing
3. It’s non-greasy and won’t run into or sting your eyes
The unique texture leaves skin feeling soft and smooth, and once you rub it in, there’s minimal whiteness. But honestly, we’d wear this stuff even if it left us white as ghosts, because it just works like nothing else. And under the punishing rays of the sun, that’s what matters. (The fact that it’s from a great little company, run by good people in North Carolina, is the icing on the cake.)
Suitable for face and body.
