Description

Aromatic resin traditionally burned to enhance focus and peace of mind / 4.9 oz

Costa Brazil’s Resina de Breu is an aromatic oleoresin — a chic, modern interpretation of the sage-burning ritual, and perhaps the coolest anti-candle we’ve ever seen. It has an incredible story, too.

Designer Francisco Costa, the creator of Costa Brazil, returned to his native country to reset and relax after leaving his post at the helm of Calvin Klein. During his trip, he flew to an isolated region of Brazil and traveled over six hours by canoe to stay with the Yawanawá community, exploring the jungle and experiencing a whole new way of life. While there, he noticed villagers burning a fragrant resin — breu — extracted from the rainforest's Almacega tree. It was something they’d done traditionally to purify one's body and surroundings, enhance focus and peace of mind, and balance the sixth chakra, the area of the “third eye” — the center of one’s intuition.

As Francisco told a reporter from The Financial Times, “Emotionally, that scent just floored me…it was the most beautiful smell, something I’d never experienced before: masculine, feminine; easy, complicated; deep and foresty.”

Indeed it is, and we couldn’t think of a better grounding scent for these times. True to Francisco’s philosophy (one of the reasons he left the fashion industry was his frustration with its overly slow movement towards more sustainable, socially responsible practices), Costa Brazil took great care to sustainably harvest the breu in ways that help the forest thrive and support local communities. And true to Francisco’s training, he packaged it in an absolutely gorgeous way: natural lumps of breu are housed in a cotton bag and beautiful silver canister, with a neutral-colored ceramic tile upon which you place the breu before lighting it.

To use the Resina de Breu, light one of the pieces and let it burn for up to a minute, then blow it out. (Some like to set an intention before extinguishing it, which we think is a fun ritual.) Its beautiful, natural, not-quite-like-anything-else scent will subtly fill the air, lifting the spirit and clearing the mind.

PS If you're looking for a gift for that hard-to-buy-for person who has everything and is impossibly chic, get them this (and a Sea Soak).

PPS If you're thinking about getting this...go for it. Once our stock is gone, it's gone; Costa Brazil, sadly, is shuttering.

How to Use

Burn Breu on the handcrafted ceramic tray included in its box. Light the tip of one small stone (an area about 1/2" in size) and let it burn for 30-60 seconds. The resin should emit a dark, fragrant smoke. Then, gently extinguish the flame by blowing or fanning.
