Description

Breathable, comfortable face mask made from organic cotton canvas / 1 washable mask

(Main image shows two masks: Natural and Stone.)

Aplat masks are made from tightly woven, 10 oz, 100% organic duck cotton canvas for better filtration of microbials during everyday wear. Created by a career industrial designer and hand sewn in San Francisco, the unique, patent-pending, double-layered origami design provides an adjustable fit and comfortable breathability, making mask-wearing much more pleasant during a pandemic.

Our team can attest to the comfort of the Aplat masks when worn all day long, thanks to their roomy construction: the origami-inspired folds in the design create a center that protrudes away from the face like a beak, allowing for better breathability. There’s even room for you to add a disposable filter (folded paper towel or coffee filter in size 2, 3, or 4) if you’d like an extra layer of protection.

We also find that the Aplat mask stays secure around the face much more easily than most masks due to the adjustable cords that wrap around the head rather than behind the ears. (You know those thin cotton masks that so many of us end up repeatedly pushing back up over our noses? These not only provide better protection, but also let you keep your hands away from your mask.) These masks fit adults as well as teens.

And — very important for us in our quest to free you from the shackles of maskne — the cotton material is much kinder to the skin than the plastics that are so frequently used in other masks offering similar protection. Aplat’s commitment to zero-waste design goes above and beyond: all the materials used in the mask are 100% biodegradable and plastic free, and these masks stand up to repeated washing, drying, and ironing.

Finally, while we find the Aplat mask to be the best everyday mask we’ve used during the pandemic and would share it with you regardless, the fact that they’re made by a gifted industrial designer (and our founder's family friend) with a wonderful story makes it all the more delightful. To learn more about the story behind the masks, read our interview with Shu Bertrand on our blog; for mask FAQs, click here.

Please note that these masks are for personal use only: they are not a substitute for N95, surgical, or procedural masks. Due to the nature of the COVID-19 virus, all mask sales are final and not eligible for return or exchange. Please follow the latest CDC guidelines on how to best keep safe.

How to Use

To put your mask on:
1. Wash before wearing. (The cotton canvas will soften after washing!)
2. Open the mask and pull a little slack on the cord loop at the top of your mask.
3. Hold the top butterfly flap of the mask on the bridge of your nose with one hand and hook the cord over the tops of each ear.
4. Grab the loose ends of the rope and pull behind your head to tighten.
5. Tie the cord at the base of the neck.
6. Pull the fold at center outward slightly like a beak to create space around the nose and mouth.
7. Adjust the fold at top and bottom to adjust to your face.
8. Adjust the position of the top rope to comfort.
9. Press all the edges down against the face to close off gaps.

To remove your mask:
1. Untie your mask.
2. Pull the top rope up and over your head away from the face.
3. Be careful not to touch your eyes, nose, and mouth when removing your mask and wash hands immediately after removing.

When not in use, we recommend airing the mask out by hanging it in a place away from other objects, ideally in the sun or other open space area until a washing is needed.
