Macrene Actives High Performance Tinted Moisturizer was created by Dr. Macrene Alexiades, a prominent New York dermatologist, to address a clear need she saw in her dermatology practice: many of her breakout-prone patients wanted to wear concealer or foundation, but their makeup was often making their acne worse. So she created this dual-duty, non-comedogenic product to even out skin tone while at the same time fighting aging and acne with more than 30 active ingredients, including a suite of peptides to address fine lines and wrinkles; amino acids to address hyperpigmentation; squalane and sunflower to moisturize and maintain a healthy skin barrier; and marine extracts for additional protection against aging.

This formula — which to us seems more like a full coverage foundation than your typical tinted moisturizer — reflects and adapts to your own complexion, providing buildable coverage for blemishes and specific problem areas or all over for a smooth, even skin tone. Importantly, it’s free of mica and talc, two ingredients that Dr. Macrene often finds linked to breakouts.

Our local makeup artist, Melissa McMillan, tested it for us for a few months and loved how it performed on her own oily, acne-prone skin: “It has a beautiful velvety finish and good coverage that builds very well. Our shade selection advice:

The Light shade is extra light and a good match for porcelain complexions with a pink undertone (it tends not to match as well for those with yellow undertones). The Medium shade is versatile and will suit most fair to light tan skin tones; Light-Medium is ideal for those on the lighter end of this range. The Deep shade is ideal for tan to dark skin tones; Medium-Deep is best for those on the lighter end of this range. Extra Deep is best for full-face coverage in deeply pigmented skin and can also be used as a contour for a naturally deep, defined look.
