Coelho’s L’Huile Sérum is probably the most beautiful hair oil we’ve tried. Designed to disappear into the hair as soon as it’s applied, it deeply nourishes, provides long-lasting protection against heat and environmental exposure, and reveals the natural shine of each strand without leaving a greasy finish. This silicone-free, mineral oil-free formula is made for all of us whose hair (and, surprise twist: skin) is asking for more moisture. Squalane adds softness and elasticity, while vitamin E protects the hair fiber from UV exposure and pollution. A beautifully lightweight blend of macadamia, argan, jojoba, grape seed, and borage oils nourishes and softens without weight, and calendula, chamomile, mallow, and aloe vera extracts help keep skin and scalp comfortable and support sensitized hair. 

What you’ll see and feel: hair that reflects light instantly and becomes softer, silkier, and easier to style from the first application. Over time, it helps hair build resilience, suppleness, and elasticity, staying protected from environmental exposures (heat, sun, salt, chlorine) while more effectively holding onto moisture. 

Of all the things we love about this product, the scent might be what we’re most deeply in love with. It’s warm, slightly resinous, slightly nutty, and deeply grounding, with fresh top notes of lavender and basil, a heart of patchouli, and a woody, faintly vanilla-like trail of labdanum and resin at the base.

Made for all hair types and textures (if you have fine hair, just use a tiny bit), we find that it’s particularly wonderful on dry, dull, chemically-treated, or sensitized hair that craves nutrition, moisture, softness, and shine. This product has converted us to regular pre-shampoo hair oil treatments; you can also use it as a scalp massage oil, and it can even pinch-hit as a body or face oil.

One of Coelho’s three foundational “hair boosters,” L’Huile Sérum works beautifully with Le Nettoyant Micellaire and La Crème de Soin. Apply this serum oil as a pre-shampoo treatment before cleansing with Le Nettoyant Micellaire, and/or apply La Crème de Soin post-wash for reinforced nourishment on very dry or color-treated lengths.

“As a pre-shampoo treatment, you just have to put one or two pumps, blend it through your lengths, massage it in, and keep it in for 10 to 15 minutes — or all night long if that’s easier. And if you need a little extra nourishment, you can use it on your scalp, body, and face, too. It’s really an oil-serum hybrid: if you use a little bit, it’s a serum. If you use a lot, it works more like an oil.”
