Concealer tips from our makeup pro, Melissa

We’ve been thinking a lot about concealer lately: it’s the unicorn that can cover two diametrically opposed makeup needs that tend to arise during this time of year.

- First of all, as the weather warms up, many of us are looking for the simplest ways possible to get a slightly-more-polished-than-bare-faced, no-makeup-makeup look.

- On the other hand, this can also be the season when we’re looking for more of a makeup boost and eye lift than usual (weddings, graduations, reunions…and, at the same time, allergies!).

Concealer, thankfully, can cover it all.

So, we asked our go-to makeup pro and Guide, Melissa, to share some of her top concealer tips with you: the two products she recommends most frequently these days and why, and her two favorite ways to apply them. Check out her tips below.

Concealers with good-for-you formulas have come a long way, and we have two options I love using on myself as well as clients:

Eye of Horus makes an excellent concealer that provides full coverage while still being gentle on the skin. It layers/builds beautifully, so even the gnarliest pimple can be hidden, and it’s a fantastic price point.
Their lightest color errs on the warm side, so for our cool toned, fair skinned folks, you’ll want to go with the next one:

Macrene Actives High Performance Concealer is a higher price point, but that’s because you’re getting the Rolls Royce of concealers - its skincare-quality ingredients are the same powerful actives that have made their serums and creams cult favorites. Macrene’s concealer clears acne and reduces signs of aging to tackle concerns from your teen years to your golden years, and it’s still very skin-like, buildable coverage.
Macrene’s lightest shade is cool, so for my cool-skinned, fair Summers and Winters, this is the concealer you’ve been looking for. The medium and deep colors, however, are in the neutral-to-warm camp without ever going too yellow-y.

Use a shade that’s little lighter than your foundation/tinted moisturizer to highlight and lift the eye area (book a session with me to learn to master this technique), or apply one in strategic areas on top of sunblock alone for the perfect “no-makeup makeup” face.
